The Soul Collector Movie Story Review and Update
The Soul Collector story of Mary (Keita Luna), a little white girl who becomes friends with Lazarus (Tshamano Sebe), a black "sangoma" witch doctor, after moving into a desolate property with her adoptive parents, is told by neophyte writer/director Harold Holscher in a cautious manner. Nevertheless, since "The Soul Collector" is set "Somewhere in South Africa" in 1977, as we are informed in an early scene, their relationship is symbolically burdened with more history than their story can support. Hence, even if Holscher is astute and/or sensitive enough to raise more questions than he answers, this movie frequently feels like an early draft of a more gruesome ghost story.
Lazarus introduces himself as "the Wanderer" at the beginning of "The Soul Collector," letting the curious know that "you are in me, and I am in you." And we'll cross paths again. I am The Wanderer, he reiterates as he draws to a close. You are mine forever, too. Compared to most of the movie's scary scenes, which frequently feel slapped on, Lazarus' danger is more potent. Most of the time, "The Soul Collector" is worth viewing because of Lazarus' identity and his sinister plans for Mary.
Lazarus comforts and counsels Mary in sequences that are reminiscent of "Curse of the Cat People." He waxes poetic over her pet silkworms because, after Mary discovers a dead monkey (fair warning: the monkey's corpse looks real enough), he has the chance to make some folksy remarks about maggots and spiritual development. Lazarus explains, "These maggots that you see here need a body to stay alive." They consume something and then transform it into something, much like your worms do. Although it sounds significant, what does that actually mean? Lazarus, as a figure and a representation of loss, is mostly left unexplained throughout "The Soul Collector" since Mary and Lazarus's family history is purposefully kept a secret.
Holscher frequently keeps spectators at a distance, maybe to lend totemic meaning to already strange imagery such as a talking body, a burning building, and an eternity that looks like limbo under the stars and is very pink. So it's unclear why Lazarus makes a deal with an unnamed god to feed his hungry, undead daughter, or why Mary keeps her worms in a music box that plays "Swan Lake" music, specifically "The Swan's Theme." Given how poorly the rest of the movie's busy plot is developed, there are some obvious explanations—because she is darker than she appears to be and he is lighter than he seems?—but they aren't very satisfying.
When the story isn't about Lazarus and Mary, it's about William (Garth Breytenbach), Mary's obstinate adoptive father; Sarah (Inge Beckmann), his nag-like wife; and, oh yeah, a nearby tribe of black South Africans, led by Obara (Chris April), a sympathetic elder who lost one of his eyes to Lazarus. Okay, but who are these individuals and why is this important?
